Turkey: Religious officials to perform civil marriages | News

The Turkish parliament has passed a law that permits muftis – religious civil servants – to perform civil marriages in the same capacity as other officials authorised to conduct such ceremonies.  The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) says the new legislation, which was adopted on Wednesday, will cut the number of unregistered marriages.
