Using ADB and Fastboot is fairly easy if you know where to find them. It’s not particularly intuitive. XDA Senior Member Mohamed Hashem wrote a nice Java tool which brings ADB and Fastboot functionality in a nice graphical way. In current version, it works with Windows only, but compatibility with other systems is in works.
