The Nexus Player debuted in 2014 with Android 5.0 Lollipop and the Android TV platform. With less than a 2-year lifespan, it comes as a surprise to see it removed the Google Store so quickly. It seems unlikely that we’ll see something new from Google later this year, but anything is possible. The product also looks to be sold out at most of the major retailers.
