Before, if a developer wanted to make two API calls when they wanted some details about a user’s contacts (Google+ API for user profiles and the Contacts API for contacts). So to help streamline the process, Google has created the People API which condenses the process into one single API call. Naturally, users will still need to grant access before an app accesses their contacts.
